The SM.82 Canguro was developed from its predecessor, the S.75, maintaining the configuration and wing structure of the latter. Its use as a bomber was extremely limited, although it is worth remembering its raids on Gibraltar, Alexandria and Manama in the Persian Gulf. The new, particularly voluminous fuselage, however, allowed this aircraft to be appreciated for its role in transportation. It was used by the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force), by the Luftwaffe and, in the period of the Italian Civil war, by both sides. Other models served with the LATI (Transcontinental Italian Airlines) in the pre- Second World War period, and with the newly established Italian Military Air Force in the period after the war. The last examples were withdrawn at the beginning of the 1960s....more

The SEPECAT Jaguar was a joint Anglo-French project. It first took to the air in 1968 and, since then, 202 of them have seen service with the RAF and another 200 with the Armee de l'Air. It has also achieved a certain success on the export front. The reduced surface area of the wing gives excellent low altitude performance and this, together with its considerable weapons payload, makes it a feared ground strike aircraft, as demonstrated in conflicts in Chad and Iraq. This helicopter was designed towards the end of the forties for the U.S. Army, which introduced it during the final phase of the Korean War in 1953. Notwithstanding the fact that it was equipped with an insufficient engine, the H-19 became a reliable aircraft and was quickly used by the other departments too: by the Marines, the Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard for transport tasks, rescue and anti-submarine missions. In 1965, during the Vietnam War, the outstanding load capacity of the CH-47 Chinook led the U.S. Army to request a heavily armed version in order to provide support for the AH-1 Cobra. The first flight took place on 6th November of the same year and, in May 1966, four examples of these ‘heavy’ Chinooks, assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry Division, were stationed at the An Khe base for trials. Thanks to heavy armaments, including a 40 mm XM-5 grenade launcher, two 20 mm M-24 cannon, five 12.7 mm M-2 machine guns and two hook-up points for rocket launchers or other loads-plus heavy armour to shield both crew and helicopter–the ACH-47 proved highly effective in a ground troop support role. Nevertheless, because of the complexity of the aircraft and the pressing need for transport versions of the Chinook, the U.S. Army halted any further development....more

The A-4 owes its origins to a desire expressed by the US Navy for a replacement of the A-1 Skyraider. The engineering design genius Ed Heinemann created a super lightweight and simple airplane which was pressed into service on American aircraft carriers in 1956. The E(of which 499 were made) and F(of which 147 were made) represent the first real upgrade in airplanes, with a more potent engine, two extra mooring towers for cargo (for a total of five) and improved avionics, They were used extensively, and with excellent results during America’s war in Vietnam....more
